The completely redesigned 2016 Toyota Prius made its global debut today during a special event in Las Vegas with over 350 people in attendance. This fourth generation of the immensely popular hybrid aims to increase sales and keep competitors at bay. Look for it to arrive in showrooms next year at a date and starting price that have yet to be announced.
Sporting more athletic lines than its predecessor, the new Prius is the first global vehicle to implement Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA), which helps reduce weight and maximize performance. A lower centre of gravity and more responsive suspension package are TNGA hallmarks.
The revised exterior features new standard LED headlamps, rear combination lamps, a rear spoiler, a lowered hood, and a palette of six body colours including an all-new Toyota hue, “Hypersonic Red.” Meanwhile, the interior boasts a wrap-around dash design, form-hugging seats, as well as more room for passengers and cargo.
On the safety front, the 2016 Prius will be among the first Canadian models to offer Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), a new multi-feature advanced safety package anchored by automated pre-collision braking. TSS bundles cutting-edge safety technologies including:
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection;
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist;
- Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control;
- Automatic High Beams.
“As we launch the new Prius, this ambassador for the future moves beyond the rational advantages of hybrid power – to engage Canadians with bold styling and driving fun,” said Larry Hutchinson, Vice President at Toyota Canada Inc. “The 2016 Prius is ready to invite more Canadians to become hybrid drivers, with its impressive looks and dynamic handling – even as it continues to deliver remarkable fuel efficiency and environmental responsibility.”
